( The night of the charity auction he learns Cas has been in the city for a few months. A chance encounter with a stranger and bewitching sleigh bells delay the message he fully intended to send. He wanders for three days at the Shadow Ball. It's after, when he has his personal space, his clothes, and his device back, that the echo of Qi'Ra asking him about his angel plays back through his head.
He's ushered back through the Up and brought back onto the train. It's there when he finally finds Cas' name in his phone's directory. He wants to type that a fictional, double-crossing criminal told him Cas is there. But this is not about Qi'Ra, it's about Cas. He's here in the flesh. Not in the Empty. )
So, I heard you were in the city. I'd have gotten in touch sooner but I didn't know and when I did, I walked myself into an Eyes Wide Shut cosplay. Where are you right now?
[Thanks to his hand at hiding Dean from the angels Castiel neither felt nor heard word of Dean's arrival until this particular message. After staring at the username, profile picture, and name for some time he finally replies. His concern and guilt manifest like a slowly steeped cup of tea and pour into him like a flood.]
Are you talking about the ball? I didn't go. I was in prison. Right now I'm in the down provided housing. Where can I meet you?
( Dean starts the video with the camera facing him and the bar he now manages and bartends for. He took the first night to get acclimated, make sure it's what he wants. But, a decision's a decision, and his bar is all set-up.
He moves the camera around as he turns, showing the illuminated bar, the seating, and the unoccupied stage. Cas can also spy a fully set-up bar, some fruit trays and jiggers and shakers at the ready. )
[Castiel's not stepped foot in many bars, he had come close once only to be redirected by someone else and the only other time he'd been in one was to rescue a young man that had clearly been confused.
Neither time left any kind of lasting effect on him, but seeing Dean in command of his spaces manages to get the corners of his lips up, but only marginally.]
So, I did my research, and apparently if I don't sign a contract by the deadline, they might swap me completely. Again, I don't know. I want to be your Dominant, but I might need to take someone else on first, to restart the clock.
I wanted to tell you because it matters what you think I don't care about going to jail for three days I've been in worse
But if the consequences aren't what we think they are, I don't want to miss our chance.
So what do you think And don't do your stoic angel thing you do I want to know what you really think
Dean, it wouldn't upset me if you took on two contracts, but be sure that it's something you can handle before you sign someone else on.
They have to do depend on you, just as I do. Otherwise, I can sign another contract for another term. I don't mind going to prison if one of us should have to.
( March 23rd creeps up on them. Their's nothing casual about their occasional domesticity, but they don't talk about it. They flirt. Or, Dean flirts and Cas lets him. Cas also needles. He rediscovers his fondness for sarcasm with Dean and Dean finds he likes his sass. They don't get on each other's nerves. He notices Castiel has been talking to more people and not just because of the horny singles in their area. What he and Cas have is special. They are bonded. United in all ways but one here, and still without a definition to their dalliances or their quiet moments when no one is watching. Or their sex.
Sex or not, he wants to protect Cas. He doesn't want to make decisions for him, but he wants Cas to be able to make decisions. If he thinks about it, life has just been easy since Steve moved in and since Cas came back. Everything is somehow uncomplicated and fun. Sex is fun. Experimentation and the promise of new experiences he wouldn't be able to reconcile in the real world get him excited. He's more careful with Steve. He knows Steve has other people. And Steve accepts Cas.
He does wonder if making things official and permanent is defining. Can he define things? My billion year old angel boyfriend feels silly to say, as does man friend. He likes the idea of 'my guy.' Even 'my angel.' But, if anything's official, it would be 'boyfriend.' Can he live up to it. Will he fuck it up like he did with Cassie and Lisa? And what happens when the city fucks them over or makes them fuck other people. He wants to keep exploring. But, he wants Cas by his side while he does. Is it fair?
He sends Cas a message, unlike the one he sent the night before, this one is an invitation for breakfast. His choice whether he eats or not, Dean can also make him the coffee he likes from the place on the corner. Their grounds are just good. But, they need to talk. And he needs to get some things off his chest.
[Castiel's always come when Dean called, and Duplicity and its limits made no difference. With a fleeting awareness of time crawling ever closer to their contract date Castiel has been restless. With Max moving out of their shared unit and the absence of the ease he felt while staying with Dean he'd been forced to preoccupy himself elsewhere. Communicating on the network was the easiest course of action, but he would on occasion spend time at Crimson because of Dean's presence and influence there.
He remained faithful to Poe too, going through the loss of a partner and knowing in some sense what that absence felt like he couldn't rightfully leave him on his own.
The promise of Dean's fluffy eggs and the anticipation of something more has Castiel arriving earlier than he would normally. Coffee is one of the few things he'd come to enjoy through exposure to Dean and his life at home and so caution and an appropriate measure of time between his call and flying over escapes him.
He appears not long after their audio line is terminated, close to the sofa in the living room, but quiet so as not to wake Steve if he was still sleeping.]
You're up early.

Hello, hello! This is Jaskier. I apologize for not getting back to you sooner, but given how things are in this city, I'm sure you'll understand. That said, I am free from jail and have been for a while, so you need not worry about me as I have rejoined the population and am once again regaling people with my wonderful voice.
( it's a recorded voice message, as he's on the move. )
Faith was roughed up by a flying red horned demon. Buffy and I are both itching for a real right that's not with each other. ( He pauses. ) She's not looking good, Cas. She's on the network. I'll call you if I need you. ( Shit, he can't make a million of these. ) Tell Steve.
I'm sorry to have to tell you this, but Barry died. He'll be back around the 20th, if he doesn't get sent home, but he won't remember anything from here for a week.
