IC INFORMATION
Character Name: Castiel
Canon: Supernatural
Canon Point: Season 8, Episode 7: A Little Slice of Kevin
Age: While no canon-specific age is stated it's remarked upon by Castiel when speaking of his history that he'd been alive long before humans occupied the planet. Given that, it's safe to say that Castiel is anywhere from several thousand to several million years old. He's older than the sun and earth and his species took precedence canonically before mortal life ever did. This being said his vessel and the man that he hosts, Jimmy Novak, is in his late thirties to early forties and this is the appearance he will be taking in the game.
Background: here
Suitability:
Castiel is introduced as an agent of heaven, tasked with pulling Dean Winchester out of hell and then ensuring his fate. In his time spent with Dean and his brother, he begins to feel. Something his brothers consider "doorways to doubt," he is brought back to the host and reindoctrinated for the very same thing. Being made and unmade doesn't stick and with time and the realization that his family and his orders are wrong Castiel rebels, chooses humanity over heaven, and helps the Winchesters prevent the apocalypse.
He is inquisitive by nature and though a soldier by trade is unafraid of being unaware or unfamiliar with a situation. His lack of social graces hasn't ever stopped him from trying, he's diligent, loyal, and uncompromising when he feels he's doing what is right.
Despite being no-nonsense and tactical by way of his creation he's also uncharacteristically empathetic thanks to his experience with emotions being largely new and uncommon for an angel of his status. He is wise beyond his years and has been able to apply what he knows emotionally to his own intellectual pursuits just fine for someone that is learning to navigate feelings. He has a fine-tuned attention to detail and an indefatigable sense of duty.
Given the circumstances of Abraxas as a city and his arrival being what it was he'll be more likely to trust the input of other travelers like himself than those native to the environment. He'll come to his own decision with regard to the state of the world, and its magic, but won't take anything, anyone says at face value and will come to conclusions his own way.
Powers:
Castiel's abilities are as follows. In terms of capabilities, his reach will be limited to the location he's bound in. He will not be able to see, fly, or move past the barriers that are there. The rest of the abilities may be nerfed or adjusted however you see fit.
Angels in Supernatural canon vary as far as abilities and strength are concerned, Castiel, however, has been spoken of often as a lower-tier or division angel, and therefore his powers aren’t as considerable as the alleged four archangels and the prowess that they show canonically. All angels are required to have the consent of their vessel before using and possessing them and all vessels are designed well beforehand and born through blood and breeding.
• Castiel’s true form is the size of the Chrysler building, roughly, as spoken by him in canon.
• Angels have the ability to raise the dead, heal, exorcise demons, and transport people from one place to another by touch alone. They have also been known to ward charges against evil or others of their kind through a touch (as proven by Castiel and the Enochian sigils that he carved into the ribs of Dean and Sam simply by reaching out and pushing his palm against their chest.)
• They’re highly durable while in their vessels and are impervious to all human weapons. They can only be killed by another of their kind or with an angelic sword.
• Angels can warp time and transport or move within the future or the past. Castiel can do this but it exhausts him and leaves him unable to do much more after the fact, winded and in pain.
• Angels have an ability called Angel Radio wired directly into their genetic makeup. It consists mostly of other angels speaking Enochian (their native tongue) on their same frequency and it can even key into mortal prayer as well.
• Castiel seems to gain power when weak by touching the soul of another person, he can also see their souls when doing this and can sense their strength and/or vulnerability.
• Angels quite literally fly from place to place with such intricate velocity that it’s unable to be seen by human eyes. It’s keyed into their wings (Castiel’s which he’s shown twice in canon) and allows them to move from one place to another within seconds and is seen by most of humanity as teleporting and teleportation. They appear in whatever place they’re needed with nothing but a flutter of wings. As spoken of above, angels can also do the same with other people by pressing two fingers into their temple and carrying them along with them on their journey.
• Angels have no need to rest, use the bathroom, eat, drink, or bathe. They can simply will themselves clean and it’s as if time has stopped for their vessels in question. They don’t age and it takes very much to kill them or make their powers dwindle.
• Their senses are also very keen. They’re able to pick up on other creatures immediately and can sense an entire area, sometimes further, for the sole being, they're looking for searching with mostly their mind and the power that is on their faculty.
• All of this ties into their grace, which is essentially what makes them angelic and keeps them as strong as they are. When their grace has expired, or they have willingly given it up, they’re little more than mortals but incredibly aged beings in the body of whichever vessel that they’re inhabiting.
PERSONALITY QUESTIONS
Describe an important event in your character's life and how it impacted them.
Choosing Freedom — His choice to defy orders, to fight alongside the Winchesters for humanity was the first decision he'd ever made that was solely his own. Up until that choice, he'd been a creature of design created to carry out tasks, a being of subservience.
After his rebellion, he was forced to navigate the human world and considered a traitor by his brothers and the host. More time spent among humanity, alongside the Winchesters, and their plight ultimately meant experiencing and having to contend with emotion.
That choice being what it was, and his inexperience with being in control of his own fate created a series of events that snowballed into decisions like working with Crowley to find souls for heaven and retrieving Sam from hell without his soul.
The residual effects of having free will have been difficult for him to reconcile. “Now I realize that there is no righteous path, it’s just people trying to do their best in a world where it is far too easy to do your worst.”
Purgatory and penance both played a huge part in his awareness of his own independence and how choices even made with good intentions can still have unintended repercussions. In choosing freedom he's had to apply his life to that uncertainty and continue forward despite nothing being guaranteed or preordained.
Does your character have a moral code, or other set of standards they try to live by?
Grappling with what sense of humanity he has and has learned while between heaven and earth Castiel has come to develop his own credo and ethics to live by. Dutiful by nature, loyal to a fault, and naturally perceptive Castiel approaches problems not with the immediate interest of fixing them but with patience and perseverance to see them through to the right end.
Despite being at odds with himself, his status in heaven, and heaven, on the whole, his heart remains in the right place. Samandriel put it plainly, "I think too much heart was always Castiel's problem," and true to the opinion he puts his entirety in everything he commits to. All of himself. Every inch.
The people that he's come to love, come to learn love from — The Winchesters don't do anything halfway. While being aware of their codependence, and their uncomfortable disregard for rules of any kind he's adapted that same sense of resilience and compassion toward what he cares about and who he cares about. He's steadfast in the face of the same challenges he faces alongside them and meets each obstacle with renewed fervor.
Everything he's come to love about people, humanity, and the fight for choice was born with his decision to align himself with Dean and Sam against the unstoppable machine of the apocalypse. The Winchesters are many things, but perfect is far from one of them. They're messy, indecisive, chaotic at the worst of times, and resolute at the best. Their flawed constant struggle toward what is right at the expense of themselves, at the expense of their own inner peace were the first stepping stones toward his own understanding of the same motivations.
Castiel is already an altruist by nature, having lived for as long as he has he doesn't mind being collateral for a cause more significant than himself. Fighting heaven, hell, and what he'd known since infancy has made moral alignment less of a secure stance and more about finding what's right and what's true on his own. A creature of faith, he looks for guidance out of necessity and his motivations are always toward a force beneficial for more than just himself but the whole of everything.
What quality or qualities do they admire most?
Honor, integrity, and determination, are all core concepts for him and something he values because they're the same virtues that made him. The same devices he leans on when nothing else can fortify him. His companionship to humanity has given him a healthy admiration for love, loyalty, and all therein. The ugliness and the beauty that is the human condition. Flawed imperfect beings doing the best they can with what they've been given, free will, and finite time. Fighting against adversity and a world that would much rather collapse in on itself.
Living among humans, seeing their tolerance for what is different, and moving forward toward better things despite the evil that is so intrinsic to the world they live in is the foundation for what keeps him motivated to fight for humanity and for what he believes in. The same thing that makes him love his father's creation so profoundly, even though that same creator chose to turn his back on it.
Do they have a part of themselves they dislike?
Gazing inward has never been something that Castiel has found comfort in. His relationship with heaven being contentious and the opinions of his peers being varied his own internal reflections are a gauge that is never balanced. Being prone to self-assessment isn't something he's ever been profoundly good at but he's aware of his misgivings and mistakes all the same.
His most considerable flaw and one that he can and does acknowledge within himself is acting on his motivations, falling back on the pretenses of being a soldier, and doing so without thought toward the outturn of events. Having been wired to carry out tasks for so long, despite the ripple effect that those things can cause it wasn't until recently that he was made to witness the totality of the repercussions of his actions. In a sense, his biggest flaw is failing to see the bigger picture, and being heedless and impatient where carrying out a task is concerned.
He thought he'd been doing the right thing for heaven when he took in the souls that brought the Leviathans to earth and as they say, the road to hell is paved with good intentions. The ends don't always justify the means and Castiel has had to learn the hard way that just being a soldier isn't good enough. His lack of follow-through and introspection, failing to see the full scope of what he's doing has only made things worse and put a blight on his name.
What is their sign, and why?
Death: All of Castiel's actions so far have been to benefit those that he cares for and the future of his father's creation. Often, at the expense of himself he will put life and limb on the line to guarantee a plan is carried out and what needs to be done is completed. His desire to fix his own shortcomings, make amends for wrongdoings and resolve the indirect consequences of his actions is a core motivation for his character and makes this sign an ideal fit.
